“Carmencitas”, this year’s production of GNO’s Children Opera which combines opera with ballet, is presented at Olympia Theatre from December 20, 2015 to April 24, 2016. Based on the music of Bizet’s Carmen, “Carmencitas” is about the joy and finite of life, the need to invest in values that bring people closer: friendship, love, solidarity. The story takes place one Sunday morning in a park, where a group of children, a scouts’ battalion and a few elderly visitors meet and share the joy of living. It is a work of simple messages that wishes to communicate with its young audience through the experiential art of dance. It is addressed to children of pre-school age as well as elementary school students. Even though the performance is primarily based on dance, songs and spoken word are used to render the plot accessible to those less accustomed to the dancing vocabulary. The performance is choreographed by Maria Kousouni and directed by Alexandros Efklidis. The Children’s Theatre Orchestra, Principal Dancers, Soloists, Demi-Soloists, Opera Soloists and Corps de Ballet of the GNO participate in “Carmencitas”.
