Description

Discover the ancient city of Athens and its world-famous Acropolis and ancient Corinth, buried under millennia of sand. First, you will be visiting one of Greece's oldest marvels: the Corinth Canal. The canal is a long and narrow stretch of water that runs through Corinth, linking the Gulf of Corinth on the North to its outlet in the Saronic Gulf on the south. The canal is unique because it cuts through the Greek mainland to allow ships to pass from the Atlantic Ocean on one side to the Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Today, you will be able to see some of these impressive engineering accomplishments in action. After you are back in Athens you're going to experience the ancient sites and hundreds of museums, including the iconic Parthenon as well as lesser-known treasures like Byzantine-era churches and monasteries. A visit to Athens is not complete without a walk through the beautiful Ancient Agora. Spend time at one of Athens’ most famous sites, where Socrates taught and Plato debated, before heading across the ancient city walls to see the remains of another highlight: the Temple of Hephaestus, which was built in the fourth century BC and is today a ruin. Then it’s on to the bustling central square of Plaka, with its many shops and restaurants. Here, you can stroll through Old Athens—the quarter where Socrates lived and drank his famous hemlock cocktail with friends before dying around 399 BC. Your next stop is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the most important religious monument in Athens. The site, originally a temple dedicated to the Phoenician god Baal, was constructed on top of an earlier temple built in about BC 675. Excavations have revealed various artifacts from this period including friezes and sculptures depicting fertility-related themes. You'll need at least 3 -4 hours to visit the ruins and explore them fully. After the tour, your private driver will take you back to your hotel. The total duration of the tour will be 10 hours from pick up to drop off.
