Local tip
It's a good and relaxing escape from the turbulent surrounding area. The fact that the entrance is free is a big plus as well.

The Athens Municipal Gallery is one of the biggest and most popular art museums in the whole of Greece that links private and publicly owned art collections. The art work is predominantly contemporary and of Greek origin, making it a great place to stop to take in Greek culture.

The collections include more than 3,500 works which are made up mostly by paintings and prints. These are by artists such as Lacovidis, Parthenis, Eggonopoulos, Kefallinos, Theodoropulos and many others.

The museum has been curated and laid out to present exhibitions of solo artists as well as artists grouped together who have worked in similar ways or on similar ideas. The parallels drawn between the pieces by their presentation makes this a really interesting and fun museum that goes a long way to inform the visitors and take them on a journey through the artists. The relevant catalogues are identified at the entrance to each exhibition.

There is also an education programme of learning at the museum for children and young people who want to be involved in the gallery and find out about the pieces on display. This includes information for people as young as pre-school age.
