Description
Set off on a full-day trip to Meteora from Athens. Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and marvel at the monasteries built on towering, pillar-like rocks. Visit two monasteries and get a glimpse into the life of Greek Christian monks.
Start your day with pickup from one of the designated meeting points in Athens (Plaka Area, Syntagma Area/Greek Parliament, Omonoia Square, Karaiskaki Square). Board the coach to Meteora and enjoy the ride (approximately 4 hours). Sit back and relax, take in the Greek countryside, and snap photos along the way.
Arrive around noon in the traditional town of Kalabaka, built at the foot of the majestic Meteora rocks, where your local guide joins the group. If you selected the lunch option, enjoy a seasonal salad, one main course, and water (vegetarian and vegan options available). If you chose the no-lunch option, use your free time to explore the town, grab a snack, and rest before the Meteora tour.
After lunch/break, the Meteora tour begins. Hear how the Meteora rock formations were created millions of years ago and learn about the nature and history of this extraordinary place. In the 9th century, monks began to inhabit the rocks, and in the 14th century the first monasteries were built. Today, Meteora is home to one of the most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
You’ll see all 6 monasteries and visit inside 2 of them (the specific monasteries visited depend on daily opening schedules). Please note that monastery entrance fees are not included.
