Aegina: The perfect getaway just a stone's throw from Athens
If you are in Athens, don't miss the opportunity to experience one of the most charming and historic islands of the Saronic Gulf, even for a weekend. The process is simple: book your e-ticket for Aegina via email, take the metro from the center of Athens, and in just 30 minutes you are at the Piraeus cruise port (Gate E8) ready to board.
Choose how and when you want to travel and leave the rest to the ferry. On the horizon, Aegina (the central cruise port of Aegina) awaits you; a place with a rich historical heritage as the first capital, which knows how to transform itself from a cosmopolitan summer retreat into a charming, sweet paradise in the winter season
An island full of History, Art and Nature
The island perfectly combines organized and pristine beaches with magnificent captain's houses, vibrant nightlife, and local delicacies — with the highlight, of course, being the famous pistachios of Aegina. For adventure lovers, there are wonderful hiking routes along lush green trails and through picturesque mountain villages.
But beyond its cosmopolitan side, Aegina hides great treasures worth discovering:
• The Temple of Aphaia: One of the most important architectural masterpieces of ancient Greece. This imposing Doric temple, crowned by pine trees overlooking the endless blue, forms an imaginary 'sacred equilateral triangle' with the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion.
• The Monastery of St. Nektarios: One of the largest and most important pilgrimage sites in Orthodoxy. The imposing monastery exudes a unique sense of reverence and tranquility, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
• Christos Kapralos' 'Mother': Aegina has always been a haven for artists. In the area of 'Plakakia,' outside the old workshop of the great Greek sculptor Christos Kapralos (which now functions as a branch of the National Gallery), his iconic, monumental bronze sculpture, 'Mana,' dominates the scene. She stands gazing at the sea, a striking symbol of the Greek mother, anticipation, and patience.
• The Archeological Site of Kolona: Right next to the cruise port, the ancient acropolis of the island with the only column that remains standing from the Temple of Apollo offers a magnificent sunset.
Perhaps in the end you will see that it is worth staying a little longer… It is a place with a special charm, capable of captivating you and creating a lifelong relationship with it.
