Description
In 1904, Sigmund Freud arrived in Athens with his younger brother Alexander. When he finally stood before the Acropolis — a place he had dreamed of seeing since childhood — something extraordinary happened.
For a moment, Freud could hardly believe that the Acropolis was real.
The experience was so powerful that, more than thirty years later, he was still trying to understand what had happened to him.
Freud on the Acropolis invites you to retrace that remarkable journey through Athens — not through a conventional sightseeing tour, but through an intimate experiential walk led by a psychologist.
Your journey begins in central Athens, near the hotel where Freud stayed in September 1904. Discover the unexpected circumstances that brought him to Greece, his relationship with his younger brother, his curious preoccupation with numbers — including the mysterious significance he attached to his hotel room — and the thoughts that accompanied him as he approached the Acropolis.
Then, walk in Freud's footsteps through the city.
As Athens unfolds around you and the Acropolis gradually comes into view, the story moves beyond history. At carefully selected points along the route, you will be invited to take part in simple experiential moments designed to connect Freud's journey with something more personal.
What happens when something you have desired for years suddenly becomes real?
Why can reaching a long-awaited goal sometimes bring not only happiness, but disbelief — or even guilt?
And why did Freud eventually connect his strange experience on the Acropolis with his father and with the unsettling feeling that he had 'gone further' than the previous generation?
The experience culminates beneath the Acropolis, where Freud's story, the city of Athens and your own journey briefly meet.
There, more than 120 years after Freud stood before the same monument, you will encounter the question at the heart of the experience:
What is your Acropolis?
What is the place, achievement or dream in your own life that once seemed almost impossible to reach?
No previous knowledge of Freud, psychoanalysis or psychology is required. You will never be asked to reveal anything personal unless you choose to.
Come curious. Walk through Athens differently.
You may arrive looking for Freud's story.
You may leave thinking about your own.
