Description
Explore the museum’s permanent exhibition at your own pace and move through galleries filled with thousands of historical objects. Discover ancient arms and armour, military equipment, uniforms, flags, maps and artwork, while seeing how warfare, technology and military life changed across different periods. The museum's permanent collection follows Greek military history in chronological order, from ancient times through to the contemporary period.
Among the collections are objects connected with ancient Greek warfare, the campaigns of the Hellenistic world, the Byzantine period, the Greek War of Independence and the military events of the 19th and 20th centuries. Rather than focusing only on famous battles, the displays also provide insight into the equipment, clothing and material culture associated with military life.
One of the museum's particularly notable collections originated with Petros Saroglou, whose extensive collection included thousands of rare weapons and pieces of military equipment from different historical periods. His collection became an important part of the museum's original holdings.
As you continue through the galleries, encounter objects connected with Greece's more recent military history, including the Balkan Wars, the First World War, the Second World War and later conflicts. Photographs, documents, personal objects and military equipment help create a more personal impression of the people and events behind the historical record.
The museum experience is not limited to weapons. Paintings, sculptures, historical documents, maps and other objects help place military events within their wider social and political surroundings, giving visitors several different ways to understand the periods represented in the collections.
Take your time examining the details of the exhibits. A uniform can reveal changing military traditions; a weapon can demonstrate technological development; a map can transform the way you understand a campaign; and a personal object can offer a glimpse into the experience of an individual caught up in a much larger historical event.
The museum's collection ultimately creates a broad journey through the changing character of Greek military history, connecting the ancient world with the formation of the modern Greek state and the conflicts of the contemporary era.
This general museum visit is designed for independent exploration, allowing you to move through the exhibition at your own pace and spend more time with the periods and objects that interest you most.
Whether you are interested in ancient warfare, military technology, Greek independence, modern European history or simply want to discover a different side of Athens, the War Museum offers an extensive collection within a single central location.
