Description
Visit the mighty Acropolis, which dominates the landscape, to see the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Greece, and the trademark of Athens. On the top of the famous hill, you will admire the Propylaea (Entrance), the Erectheum, the Temple of Wingless Victory, and, of course, the crowning glory of Athens, the incomparable Parthenon, the greatest monument of all times. The legend of the Erectheum recounts a riveting competition between the revered deities Athena and Poseidon for the coveted title of Patron of the city. With a mighty thrust of his trident, Poseidon caused a gush of water to erupt from the ground. In response, Athena gently touched the earth with her spear, causing a magnificent olive tree to blossom. As a result, she was hailed as the protective goddess of the city. The Porch of the Caryatids, a stunning feature of the building, showcases columns resembling marble maidens that uphold the temple’s roof. As the Acropolis houses all of Athens’ temples, devoted to the goddess Athena, it is home to Greece’s grandest and most awe-inspiring structure, dating back to the 5th century BC. As we make our way to our next stop, prepare to be amazed by the grandeur of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. This magnificent Corinthian-style temple, dating back to the 3rd century BC, is the largest of its kind in all of ancient Greece. As we venture further, we’ll encounter Hadrian’s Arch, a symbol of the boundary that once divided the old and new sections of the city during the Roman era. As you embark on a scenic journey through the city, some of the noteworthy sights you will encounter include the National Gardens, the National Library, and the iconic Parliament Building. As you continue your drive, you will pass by other must-see landmarks such as the ex-Royal Palace, Plaka, the Roman Agora, and Monastiraki, home to the Temple of Vulcan. Along the way, a quick stop will be made for photos at the ex-royal residence and the ancient Olympic Stadium, rebuilt in 1894 to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. This remarkable structure, entirely built from Pentelic marble which was also used for the majestic Parthenon, sits on the site of the original stadium dating back to the 4th century B.C. Today, the Panathenean stadium is reserved for special events such as the annual marathon finish and archery competition, as well as being a venue for the 2004 Olympic Games. As our private tour of Athens draws to a close, your driver will escort you to the magnificent Lycabettus hill, the highest point in the city. From here, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of Athens, with its remarkable skyline laid out before you. After this unforgettable stop, we’ll make our way back to the Piraeus cruise port, a brief 17-minute journey away.Includes
