Southern Suburbs

Faliro, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni

Located on the coast of the Saronic Gulf, the southern suburbs are another world away, just 30 minutes from the centre of Athens. Stretching from Piraeus to Cape Vouliagmeni, the key word here is sea. Take a drive and feel amazed by the astonishing beauty of the Saronic Gulf. Beautiful crystal clear blue waters along with some of the best and most popular beaches are found here. The locals are proud, softened by the cool breeze and toughened by the strong sea winds. Swimmers are enticed into the waters until as late as the end of October.

Piraeus, the third largest Mediterranean port is the gateway from Athens to the islands. Although harmoniously joined with the city of Athens, Piraeus is a very different place and a wonderful area to visit. The most special parts to explore are Kastella Hill and Mikrolimano. Kastella, a picturesque residential area with steep streets and stairways (a great area to explore on foot), is built into the hillside with Profitis Elias Church at the top. The area overlooks 'Mikrolimano', which means 'small port'. Mikrolimano is a pleasant harbour famous for its excellent fresh fish restaurants found by the seaside. Small bars overlook the harbour and are usually crowded, especially during the summer months.

Next to Piraeus, on the coastal bay of Faliro, there are plans for a massive recreational and cultural park. This will include sports centres, an aquarium and a bird garden.

Neo Faliro hosts the 'Stadium of Peace and Friendship', while Paleo (Old) Faliro in Trocadero is home to both the 'Nautical Museum' and the most important warship of recent Greek history, the battleship Averof. Both of which are well worth visiting.

Glyfada is the most cosmopolitan of the southern suburbs and is known as the 'Riviera' of Athens. Its gorgeous marina is filled with restaurants and cafés and is the place to come for a trendy shopping area and great nightlife.

Vouliagmeni is an attractive area with the most amazing views. A drive around here is like taking a ride in a fairytale. Abundant greenery, elegant villas, beautiful beaches, exclusive hotels and the unique and therapeutic Vouliagmeni Lake are sights not to be missed.
