Most Saronic cruises run 3 stops and serve lunch on deck. This one runs 4 — Agkistri, Metopi, Aegina, and the secluded cove at Aphaia's Grotto — with lunch at a real taverna in Aegina.
Highlights
- Eat lunch at a real Aegina taverna ashore — not a buffet on board
- Swim from the vessel at Metopi, an uninhabited islet with no crowds
- Anchor at Aphaia's Grotto, a secluded cove most operators never reach
- Sail on a traditional wooden gulet from Flisvos Marina, Paleo Faliro
- Enjoy unlimited wine, soft drinks and coffee throughout the day
Description
Board the Calypso Kos at Flisvos Marina, a traditional wooden gulet moored just minutes from the heart of Athens, and step into a different kind of day at sea. While the large motor vessels fill up at Piraeus with hundreds of passengers, you are settling onto an open timber deck with a filema: a curated Greek welcome box of local products, fresh coffee, and juice, handed to you as the gulet clears the harbour and heads south into the Saronic Gulf. The first island is Agkistri, green, pine-covered, and quieter than most day-tripper stops. You have free time here to swim at the harbour beach, walk the waterfront, or sit at a cafe before the gulet pulls anchor. Then Metopi: an uninhabited islet anchored in open water, no beach, no vendors, no crowds. You drop into the sea directly from the vessel and snorkel in water you would not find on any scheduled ferry route. Equipment is on board and ready. The third stop is Aegina, and this is where Calypso Kos does something no other operator in this category does. Instead of a buffet served on the deck, you walk off the gangway and into a local taverna for a traditional Greek lunch ashore. A proper meal at a proper table, in a town that has been feeding fishermen and travellers for centuries. You have time after lunch to explore Aegina's waterfront, pick up the island's famous pistachios, or simply walk the harbour before the gulet calls you back. The fourth stop, Aphaia's Grotto, is the one almost no other operator includes. A secluded cove on the eastern side of the island, reachable only by boat. You swim here while seasonal fresh fruits come out on deck. The ancient Temple of Aphaia, built around 500 BC, one of the best-preserved in Greece, forming the third point of a sacred triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, stands on the hillside above. It is a specific and unusual way to end a day at sea. The Calypso Kos is a wooden gulet: mid-size, characterful, and built for a different kind of cruising than the large motor ships carrying two hundred passengers on the classic three-island route. Unlimited drinks flow from departure to return, soft drinks, water, coffee, tea, beer, and wine. The crew of four knows these islands and these waters. Four stops, three islands, one day. The only cruise on this route with a sit-down taverna lunch ashore. The gulet arrives back at approximately 19:15. Daily departures April to October. Boarding from 08:00, departure 08:30.Includes
