National Museum of Contemporary Art
Athens
The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens is the sole national institution that focuses on collecting and exhibiting contemporary Greek and international art. Established in 2000, the museum set out to cover a huge gap that had been left in contemporary art's history in Greece. Exhibitions of contemporary art take place within the museum, with a goal to offer visitors a different experience. There are two main axons under which the collections are structured, which are historic, dating from the second half of the 20th century, and contemporary. The permanent collections at the museum are currently being developed and are constantly improving.
Within the framework of the EMST collection policy, the permanent collections are built based on two axes, historical and synchronic and cover the field of painting, installations, photography, video, new media, architecture and industrial design. Their enrichment is materialized in the form of purchases, donations and works coming into public property in exchange for inheritance tax and with long term loans.
Educational programmes are available at the National Museum of Contemporary Art for school groups and families, with workshops for children, tours for adults and educators' seminars.
