Piraeus, the third largest Mediterranean port is the gateway from Athens to the islands. Although harmoniously joined with the city of Athens, Piraeus is a very different place and a wonderful area. The most special parts to visit are Kastella Hill and Mikrolimano. Kastella, a picturesque residential area with steep streets and stairways (a great area to explore on foot), is built into the hillside of Profitis Elias Church and overlooks Mikrolimano, which means 'small port'. Mikrolimano is a pleasant harbour famous for its excellent fresh fish restaurants found by the seaside. Small bars overlook the harbour and are usually crowded, especially during the summer months.
