Classical Athens invented threatre in the 6th century BC and consisted of three types of drama: tragegy, comedy and the satyr play. The word 'theatre' derives from the Ancient Greek 'theatron' meaning 'a place for viewing'.

The modern city of Athens still plays tribute to its long theatrical history and tradition, with nearly 150 theatre venues and close to 400 theatre productions yearly.  Ahenians are very proud when referring to their theatrical scenes.  And it is true!
