Description
Sounio is located on the southernmost tip of Attica, it is the end point of the Athenian Riviera, at a 70 km distance from Athens. There the temple of Poseidon is situated, one of the most famous attraction and archeology site in Attica. The British poet Lord Byron was one of many who fell under its spell, composing poetry in its honor and has his name carved on one of its iconic marble pillars. The Temple of Poseidon was built on the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period to honor Poseidon, the ancient sea god. The temple dates back to 444-440 BC and was constructed entirely of local white marble in Doric style. It was the symbol of the Athenian power and an important religious maritime icon of ancient times – marking both the last sign of civilization and the first sign of homecoming for generations of Athenian seafarers.Includes
