Description
Visit some of the greatest treasures of Ancient Greece on a 2-part tour of Athens and Delphi. Spend a day exploring the archaeological sites of Athens, including the location of the first modern Olympic Games, and the city’s main highlight, the dramatic Acropolis. Continue the next day – or at a time to suit – to the Delphic Oracle on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Day 1: Athens Start your full-day sightseeing tour of Athens at Panathinaiko Stadium, birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. Built in 1896 in the central city district of Pangrati, the stadium is the only one in the world to be constructed entirely of white marble. Next, drive past the Greek Prime Minister’s residence and the Royal Palace. Admire the traditional uniforms of the Evzones Guards, and continue to the Roman Temple of Olympian Zeus. Drive past the National Gardens, the beautiful Arch of Hadrian, and the Old Parliament. One of the highlights of the day will be a trip to the Acropolis, the most impressive site in all of Greece. Visit the magnificent 5th-century B.C. temple of Pantheon, dedicated to the goddess Athena. Explore the Erechtheion, site of the sacred olive tree that sprouted after Athena struck the ground with her spear. Continue to the impressive stone theater of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. And enjoy spectacular views of Athens from the top of the Acropolis, before exploring the treasures inside the new Acropolis Museum. Stroll through the purpose-built galleries, housing approximately 4,000 objects from Ancient Greece. Day 2: Delphi Depart from Athens in the morning and drive to the spectacular city of Delphi. On the way, you will pass the two small towns of Livadia – where you will pause for a break - and Arachova. Once regarded as the center of the world, Delphi was connected to the worship of Gaia, another name for Mother Earth, and guarded by a Python dragon that was killed by Apollo. Visit the Temple of Apollo, location for the great Oracle of Delphi. Continue to the theater, where up to 5,000 spectators would watch famous Greek plays, poetry readings, and festivals. Situated at the top of the hill, it rewards visitors with superb views of Parnassus and the valley below. After touring the archeological sites, you will be free to explore on your own. Stroll around the narrow streets of the modern town of Delphi, and enjoy a cool beer in one of its welcoming taverns.Includes
