Starting from your accommodation in Athens you will visit Marathon. Marathon is a town in Greece and the site of the battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. You will visit the 1st modern Olympic stadium where the Marathon run ends. The Marathon run is well known all around the world thanks to Pheidippides, the messenger. The marathon is a long-distance running race with an official distance of 42.2 kilometers (26.2 miles). The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory by the Greek NENICICAMEN (We won) that Greeks had against the Persians with their king of Persia Darrius. Afterwards you will visit the archaeological site of Marathon where we will see the burial mound of the 192 Athenian heroes who died during the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, where the heavily armed Athenian army defeated the Persians.Includes
