Description
Start the morning at The Greek Kitchen for a short briefing on what will happen on the tour. Just a short walk from the cooking studio you'll begin your tour in Psirri, a traditional bread ring that's been the breakfast staple of many Athenians for more than a century. From here walk through winding streets where the graffiti-covered buildings are coming back to life again as the neighborhood recovers from years of economic decline to the lively streets and alleyways of Varvakios Agora, the Athens Central Market. You'll visit herb and spice sellers and olive merchants where you'll learn all about their amazing produce with a tasting session before stopping at a traditional coffee bar for a short break. Now it's time to enter the main building of the market. It's a food lover and photographer's dream with fresh meat, fish and seafood brought in daily from all over mainland Greece and the islands. Stopping here at the butchers to make some souvlaki sticks and learn about the traditional importance of these ingredients in Greek culture. It's not all meat and fish though, Greece produces a hugely diverse range of fresh fruit and vegetables, shop seasonally so that the food is always at its tasty best. A walk through the fruit and vegetable market is a great way to get the feeling of a place that hasn't changed in a long time; it's crowded, noisy and incredibly colorful. Alcohol is an important part of life in Greece, having a lot to celebrate and love there is always a drink to go with it. Hidden at the back of the market is a small store that has one of the best selections in the city. You will stop here for a tasting session and a chance for you to see that there is more to Greece than ouzo. This is where the tour ends, but not the experience: finish off at The Greek Kitchen where you'll enjoy an included lunch, wine and soft drinks. Grill the souvlaki that you made in the market, and prepare a few more simple yet classic Greek dishes.Includes
